It uses the 3 column layout with two sidebars that is preferred for increasing ad views. The color is easy to edit too if you don’t like the strong blue. I just finished editing the files and I think I had to edit five images and alter the colors in the style sheet a little to make it look the way I wanted to. There is also a ‘pro’ version of the theme if you don’t mind spending a few bucks.

It’s hard to not notice how many get rich schemes litter the internet, especially on how-to-blog websites. I have some snake oil here for you to sample but I don’t sell it myself. Although you might notice that they are ever present in the contextual advertising. I give the snake oil away free because it’s the right way to build a blog and I suggest strongly you do too. Why?

Most of the advice you’re looking for is available free all over the web. The big bloggers, (who make six figure incomes from snake oil sales), give away a lot of the advice for free too. If you’ve ever been suckered into buying one of their reports like I have you’ll notice a lot of good stuff but not much you haven’t heard already.

If you’re new to blogging or looking for a way to start a little side internet business, or been inspired by master snake oil salesman and author of the book The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich, the great and powerful Timothy Ferriss, you already have a sample of the bitter sweet taste of the magical oil. Just don’t spend any more money in search of the snake oil grail.

The simple truth is that this simple process will work if you’re lucky or smart enough to pick the right topics, write the things people want to read, write constantly, network a bunch, and then get lucky enough to be recognized by a few popular people, especially those in the main stream media.

Here is the formula in a nutshell:

Pick a focused topic you know a lot about and love writing about.

If the niche topic you pick is small, all the better.

Setup the site with a professional theme that visually caters to your audience.

Completely forget about making money for the first three to six months.

Write core content with great titles. Be sure to make it timeless and extremely valuable to readers. Don’t try to sell them anything. Use it to build trust and a good audience.

Write often and consistently.

Try to avoid syndicated content, or use it to pad the site until you have your content built.

Stay the course.

Use as many mechanisms on the blog to promote word of mouth viral marketing. These are plug-ins and widgets like the Digg Button and an email this post link, and a FeedBurner email subscription box.

Participate in online communities. Don’t be obvious in your back link building, just make it a side effect of your natural participation. The main reason is that you’re ultimate goal is making connections with the best (and most popular) people in that community in order to build quality back links. Quality links is better than quantity.

Don’t get discouraged, don’t use black hat marketing techniques. Have you every looked at a Google Analytics report in detail? Have you noticed that Google knows everything about everything? Get it… don’t try to trick Google, they are way ahead of the black hatters. Quality bloggers should never try black hat.

Wait for the opportunities you’re building. Some day you’ll get a call or email from someone in a main stream channel. This is one big break will lead to more. Once they start coming the real traffic will arrive.

Keep the quality high after the traffic arrives. You can slow down but don’t slack off.

If you start making real money consider turning it into a real business and hire someone to run the day to day operation for you but keep a hand in it as long as you want it to be good.

Like any career becoming a successful blogger takes time and paying some dues. There is no getting rich quick. For the honest blogger writing about what you love can be a great way to generate a nice stable side income. Those in a hurry will fail. Those who treat it like a career will succeed. Good Luck!

Did I miss anyhting?

Finding WordPress themes is easy. Finding good themes is a bit harder because so many people are really bad at web design. Anyone can code by learning to be a really good designer is a completely different set of skills because there is so much left brain and right brain connectivity needed. In other words you have to be analytical and creative all at the same time to be a good designer. Designing for usabilty is even more difficult. Then when you pile designing for advertising effectiveness on top of that the end result is a very small number of people that can actually create a template that will make money with ads.

Those of us blogging here on blog ON AIR are design, usability, and advertising experts. For example by day I’m a Vice President in Online Marketing at a Fortune 100 company. The build of my experience is in web application design but for years I’ve been running websites and Adsense ads. Today I’m bloggin as much as I can, building core content, and optimizing my blogs. I can code but I’d rather write so I spend my time wisely and search for the best WordPress themes instead of coding them myself.

I’ve ran across several WordPress themes that work great. Below I’ll share them with you and explain why they work so well.

NewsWeek

Newsweek is clearly the theme we chose for blog ON AIR. It’s a free theme at premiumthemes.net and easily customized. I especially like the static top story on the home page and video space in sidebar one. These areas are perfect for your best core content and will help draw people into your blog. The ad spaces in sidebar two directly to the right of the videos get a lot of exposure simple do to their proximity and position to the ads.

WP Premium

This is a free version of WP Remix. It’s great because big ad spaces are ready for your ad code directly to the right of the main content area that’s nested between valuable content and navigation areas. The natural tendency for users is to look to the right of content (more than the left) while reading simply because English is read from left to right.

This design is also much more polished than the NewsWeek theme, at least to the normal ‘novice’ web user. Many of us tend to lean more toward a minimalist aesthetic but most web users look at a theme like WP Premium and get the impression that the people behind the blog are more professional than the people behind the NewsWeek Theme. That’s why I chose NewsWeek for this blog and use WP Premium on a blog more geared for a less experience web crowd.

StudioPress

StudioPress is one of my favorite themes. Like WP Premium it’s a fairly glossy theme good for blogs targeted to wider audiences. In many ways it’s almost the same layout at WP Premium but with some important differences. It’s super easy to install ad code in the sidebar and the sidebar has a nice wide top and then slits into two columns below that.

You can place a large ad in the sidebar directly below a lead content call-out box in the upper right. I like to put videos in this space because people will stop and watch a good video. Placing ads to the right or below of a video is always successful if the placement is subtle. Subtle but clearly called out ads always get more looks because they don’t trigger ad blindness.

Subtle

Another top WordPress theme is Subtle by Frazier Media. It’s a very popular theme of blogging professionals and the visual design is geared toward web professionals. It’s clean and simple, hence the name, Subtle. Again the sidebar is to the right, starts as a single wide column and then splits into two columns. I’d recommend this theme for sites requiring less gloss and more class.

Revolution

The last theme is not a free theme but still a very good one. In fact I found it to contain a lot of great features and several configurations are available for different types of websites. Yes this is the type of theme that really turns a blog into a website in the users’ mind. It’s a theme that doesn’t scream blog but instead looks like a professionally custom designed website. The home pages are designed to suck readers into the content. Most of the ads are on the single article pages. Excellent theme and worth the every penny.

Conclusion

You’ve probably noticed that none of these themes have left sidebars. I’ve found that the only ad value a left sidebar has is at the very top of the sidebar. The rest of the sidebar is only good for navigation and since most people look to the right more often than the left when reading left sidebars get skipped. Right sidebars are the way to go.

If you don’t believe me look at MySpace and YouTube’s user interface. Shoot look at any of the top ad driven websites and you’ll notice that the ads are to the right or below content. These are the hot spots always, and I don’t think this will change for most users unless English begins to be read from right to left.

The most important things to keep in mind as time marches on is that ad blindness will change and evolve and that styles will go in and out of style.

As users begin to learn what an ad looks like they will avoid them. If the ads are contextual they will still be valuable additions to your blog but user’s will still avert there eyes. So stay ahead of the ad blindness curve by staying up to speed with the best practices of the day. The Google Adsense team does a very good job of explaining what works and what doesn’t so watching them and learning to look at the blogs of top bloggers with an eye for ad placement and design is critical.

Choosing the right visual design style is harder and totally subjective. My best advice is to keep an eye on successful blogs posting similar content to your blog. Look at their visual design with a critical eye and pick out the design elements that give it the look and feel. Look at the overall layout but don’t miss little details like white space, font size, color, link color, icons, etc. Often it’s the little pieces like little one pixel light grey lines and subtle drop shadows that give a site a polished look. FBy all means be sure to remember that visual design styles follow trends just like clothes, phones, and cars. Keep you blog in pace, or if you’re a genius, ahead of the game. Good Luck!

Blogging is now part of many people’s lives. People blog day and night without being bound by time or space. However blogging is also considered as a high risk to personal security while online.

The only reason to this is user profile. Nearly all blogs contain valid personal data uploaded by the user including phone number, e-mail address, as well as a picture of themselves. These kinds of information are gold to stalkers who may send threatening e-mails to the user.

Sometimes too much information is given to a stranger randomly met online. This information may be used against the supplier personally. In some instances blogging is used as a tool to defame someone. This is particularly dangerous when the victim finds out, as you can expect anything to happen including death.

The problem with blogging is that there is absolutely no control over what is posted.

Bloggers can freely post whatever comments they want, no matter how ruthless. Moreover you can never be sure whether the information posted is true. Bloggers’ personal information may also be false, and this is dangerous because bloggers often like mimicking other people, and this is the perfect platform to defame or exploit the victim’s profile or reputation, the victim being the person being mimicked.

As a blogger, especially the frequent ones, there are certain responsibilities that must be handled. Never ever try to defame someone, even if you are using a profile containing fake information. You are not only putting yourself at risk but also other people.

Avoid posting too much information about yourself on your blog. Limit the number of your pictures posted as it can be the subject of wrong use if it falls into the wrong hands. Also avoid posting information of your daily life. Some people like posting various events of their life on blogs, like a journal. This is the prime source of information for stalkers. Blogging is not actually a dangerous activity, but it does become dangerous once you decide to make it. Blogging is done at your own risk; do not expect online rules to save you.

List of Top 50,000 Sites by Alexa
By Johnny S Johnson

Do you run an Internet business or are you one of the many people that operate a Web site? Those involved in the Internet field know that having a high Web site ranking is very crucial to success. When it comes to reliability among customers and Internet users, many of them use the Alexa Ranking to determine how great a Web site is. Spending time improving your site’s Alexa Ranking can be very crucial. And if you want to know which Web sites you should target, there is a list of the top 50,000 sites available — but for a price.

For starters, head to Alexa.com. There, at no cost you will see how your Web site traffic ranks overall and among other similar sites. Despite a hefty $4,000 price for a list of the top 50,000 sites, Alexa has a lot of other cost-free information helpful to Web site businesspeople. It is also considered one of the more reliable and accurate site trackers, and it shows you where a site ranks overall in terms of popularity. The higher the rank number, the more popular the Web site is.

Advertising agencies as well as potential independent advertisers look to a Web site’s Alexa rank to determine if your site is worth spending time on. By having a high Alexa rank, you can sell advertising links at a higher rate, thus earning more money. Most companies will only look at the 50,000 sites.

Although some information about popular Web pages is available at Alexa.com, a full list of the sites can be bought through Alexa at about $4,000.

If you do not want to play that fee, there is a way around it. Other sellers have obtained the list and are distributing it to other sites at a much lower price. If you want to get in touch with these re-sellers, log on to a popular search engine such as Google and do a search for the top 50,000 sites. Don’t succumb to the $4,000 price when it can be had for much cheaper.

Johnny S. Johnson is an internet business and Alexa Ranking Expert. Click below to purchase Top 10,000 Sites listings at just $25.

There is no one right layout for maximizing ad performance. So much depends on the overall design of the website. Colors, font size, link color, imagery, other ads and banners all play big roles. But as you look around and review different layouts you’ll find some consistent approaches that seem to work well. We’ve done some research and found five template layouts that consistently perform well.

In this article we’ll review the five designs and explain which ad locations work best and why. We hope that the information we provide here will help you make better ad placement choices and give you a better idea of how people see your pages and ads. We’ll also cover ways to defeating ad blindness and how to take advantage of it.

All the layouts are fairly wide. When we started in the industry we had a lot of users with resolutions of 640×480 and 800×600 was the norm. Today we see many people with very high resolutions hitting our websites so designing pages that fit those screens better is fairly safe to do. Also note that the ‘text link’ at the top of the page is not a suggested Adsense ad location. It is a great place for a single text ad that rotates with each page refresh. You’ll also notice we use the maximum number of ads possible, 3 link units and 3 ad units in each design. The ad with the #1 is the most clicked ad and ideally should load first.

Layout One

This layout provides three ads above the fold. The fold is old newspaper term for anything on the front page visible when the newspaper is folded. You hear it used in the online world all the time for everything visible on a web page before a user scrolls. Few bounce visitors (people who hit and leave) every scroll.

Ideally the first ad that loads (first ad in the html) should be your most clicked ad because Google places the top paying advertisers in order from top to bottom. This way you put the top payers in the hottest spots. In this design we’ve found that the large 336×280 ad unit to the right gets the most clicks followed closely by the 160×90 link unit in the upper left. If you tweak your code so that the best ad loads first you’ll make more money, theoretically.

Eye tracking studies (not ours) show that people will look at ads placed to the right of content. It makes a lot of sense because people read English from left to right. (Sorry we can’t comment on websites with other languages since we have no experience there.) Ads adjacent to high traffic navigation areas will also get more clicks simply due to proximity and wandering eyes.

The next most clicked ad is directly below the article. In this design we’ve placed a 468×60 half banner. Half banners tend to suffer from ad blindness a little more than link units in this location. Ad blindness is simply the reality that people avoid looking at ads in general and have learned to avoid anything that looks like ads, like image banner ads.

In the beginning Google Adsense ads didn’t look like ads to people. They looked like content. We’re finding that people are catching on and are developing ad blindness to certain ad formats and locations. For example you’ll notice we don’t suggest using 728×90 leaderboards. This is simply because we have had a lot of bad luck with those over time. But if you love them feel free to jam one in at the top of your pages. The only disadvantage is they push your content and other ads 90 pixels below the fold farther.

The other ads on the page are placed below of to the right of the content. The 160×600 wide skyscraper is placed between the main content column and the right sidebar content because the users’ eyes will have to jump over it to get to the content links they want to read. We’ve found that 160×600 wide skyscrapers are becoming more subject to ad blindness and this layout technique tends to help, forcing the users’ eyes to jump from one valuable piece of content to another.

Layout Two

This layout also has three Adsense ads above the fold but it uses a video in the upper right corner. Good video content can keep people on pages a long time and their eyes will wander onto nearby ads. So we’ve placed a 300×325 directly below the video and a 180×90 link unit to the left. Links placed below images are often scanned by users so below images (or videos) is a prime spot to place ads. Be careful thought, Google’s policies do not allow placement tricks that make the images look like part of the advertising. Be sure to maintain some kind of clear visual difference.

You’ll also notice that we’ve forced the users’ eyes to jump from the top article to the video. We chose not to use a 160×600 wide skyscraper (or similar larger ad) because of the ad blindness issues associated with the larger ads.

The other ads on the page are placed with the content to increase ad effectiveness. It’s also worth pointing out that the wider right column to the right of the 160×600 skyscraper seems to work better than having a narrower far right column. We think this is because it’s easier to read a wider column so users’ eyes will jump there more naturally.

Layout Three

This design places a full size video right in the article. This is useful if you post a lot of videos. Just like in the first design the top right and left ads will draw the most content. You’ll also notice we’ve placed a large 336×280 between posts. We’re finding that the small 90 pixel high link units and the largest 336×280 ad units work best between articles.

This design also uses a 728×15 link until under the tab navigation. You’ll often see sub-navigation below tabs so it is a natural place for users to expect to see links. Just try not to mislead your users by making them think it is sub-navigation.

The other important piece of this design to note is that we’ve tried to place another 300×250 ad unit to the right of the second video on the page. This is to create a similar effect as the ad placement at the top of the page. This is a little trickier since it is not always possible to guess the length of a post and you may need to adjust the number of items in the lists on the right so that the ad appears to the right of the second video.

Layout Four

This is a tried and true design you’ll see on many websites. Nesting a large ad, like a 336×280 or a 300×250 inside the content is very effective. Placing the two ad units at the top of the right and left column will also get you a lot of success. Placing a horizontal link unit like a 468×15 at the bottom of a column is popular to do but use this with caution because it invites someone who just read the whole page to leave the website. Instead try placing related article links there and earn a user.

Layout Five

In this design we’re using ad blindness to our advantage. We’ve placed a banner ad on the page because we know the users’ eyes will jump over it and we’ve placed good link content to the right with a link until on above and below the links. The users’ eyes will recognize that the worst part of the page is that awful banner and jump right onto the text ads. If you suft some of the biggest blogs you’ll see this technique used a lot, but you’ll see few people talking about it. It’s not really a trick just a reality. People hate banners.

The other ads on the page, the 160×90 link unit and the 336×280 ad unit at the top right and left corners are in their normal effective locations.

Conclusion

We hope this helps you optimize you website or blog and increase your ad performance. Layout is important; just don’t forget all the other aspects like font color, font size, backgrounds, etc. We’d also love to heard what you think and see links to your website after optimizing with these ideas. Good Luck!

Whether you are blogging for online income or for affiliate marketing purposes, you need to understand how to write an effective post. Otherwise your blog won’t get the traffic you want and you’ll end up failing to achieve your ultimate goal.

Here are some tips:

* Make the copy informative - Don’t just write fluff that no one cares about. Make your posts interesting and informative so your audience will want to come back for more.

* Use links - Audiences love links but so do search engines. If you can add links throughout your posts in ways that make sense and that will be useful to readers, then you should do well.

* Add bulleted lists - Paragraphs are boring to read. People want to scan your post in a couple of seconds and move on to the next page. The bulleted list is key to keeping them engaged.

* Engaging headlines - If you read the news, you know it’s the headlines you look at. Make them interesting enough to draw in readers but don’t give away everything or readers will just keep moving.

* Keep it short - Most blog posts today are between 300 to 500 words in length. That’s too long. Keep it to 250 words or less if you want your audience’s attention.

* Use advertising carefully - Banner advertising and Amazon affiliate links are great ways to earn cash through your blog but you don’t want to overwhelm readers with your push for cash. Keep ads to a minimum and use affiliate marketing links only when they are appropriate.

These tips will help you write better blogs and pull bigger audience.
